Paul Edmondson joined CMS Cameron McKenna in 1992, qualifying as a solicitor in 1994 and becoming a partner in 2002.  He now heads the firm’s Financial Services team.  He advises financial institutions on a range of regulatory and related commercial issues. Clients include banks, insurers (life and non-life), fund managers, broker-dealers, insurance intermediaries and trade associations.  Paul is the author of the insurance regulation chapter in the Oxford University Press publication, “Financial Services Law”.

Paul specialises in financial services and insurance regulation, advising businesses in the financial services and insurance industries on a wide range of regulatory and commercial issues.

Experience includes:

  • Over a dozen firms in major Financial Ombudsman Service "wider implications" cases, including successfully defending the industry lead case on mortgage endowments, and advising on judicial review and other remedies.
  • Regulatory projects: advising firms on preparation for major regulatory change, such as implementation of MiFID, the Insurance Mediation Directive and the Payment Services Directive.
  • New business: advising on applications for FSA authorisation and the establishment and maintenance of compliant systems.
  • Product development: advising on the development of financial services products, including contractual terms, in particular in the insurance (life and non-life) and fund management sectors.
  • Distribution: advising on distribution arrangements between product providers and intermediaries and the establishment of compliant sales processes.
  • Business transfers: advising on insurance and banking business transfers under part VII FSMA.
    Arrow: advising on preparations for Arrow visits, and responses to Arrow RMPs.
  • Outsourcing: advising financial institutions on the regulatory and contractual issues associated with outsourcings, in the UK and offshore.
  • Other contractual arrangements: advising on contracts, such as custody, fund management and terms of business, for a wide range of financial institutions.
  • Industry-wide issues: advising clients on how to respond to difficulties encountered by counter-parties and product providers as a result of the financial crisis and on industry-wide issues such as PPI, endowments and personal pensions.
  • Financial crime: advice on money laundering, sanctions, terrorism, market abuse and insider dealing.
  • Ombudsman: advising firms on FOS complaints.
