David Butts is the Managing Partner and the head of the corporate and commercial practices in our Sofia office. He also takes a lead role in the CMS Cameron McKenna CEE lifesciences industry focus group.
David has extensive experience in corporate and commercial matters. His main focus is on M&A, private equity and joint ventures. In the commercial sector he focuses on life sciences, real estate and TMT. David’s experience in the legal profession includes working at one of Canada’s pre-eminent corporate and commercial law firms, acting as general counsel for the Canadian subsidiary of a multinational pharmaceutical company, and being the founding partner of a commercial law firm located in Montreal, Canada, where he practiced commercial law with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property protection and technology licensing. He has been engaged in corporate and commercial work in the CEE region for the past 10 years.
David has advised a number of the most prominent investors in Bulgaria and the region. His work often includes counselling on complex transactions, which span a variety of jurisdictions and which require systematic coordination and an understanding of relevant markets and industries.
David is recognised as a 'problem-solver who can find solutions in real time around the negotiation table' and for his 'extensive knowledge of international business, coupled with his understanding of the local legal framework', Chambers 2008. He is also recommended as a leading expert in the fields of IP, IT and Telecoms by European Legal Experts. Legal 500 2008 points out that David 'is particularly recommended for his industry expertise and "excellent client management".'
