Competition breakfast briefings 2010: Competition issues in technology and communications

Technology based sectors remain an extremely high priority for EU competition law enforcement.  This unsettling focus reflects a perception that a company in control of technology - in particular where this equates to controlling access to an essential market input - will enjoy market power, coupled with a recognition that regulation and competition are complementary instruments.  Businesses active in these sectors need to understand how the competition authorities characterise technology markets and what aspects of their activities are most likely to come under scrutiny.

In this breakfast briefing we shall look at:

  • the importance of competition law in technology and communication sectors
    • the rules
    • the competition authorities' enforcement
    • priorities
    • the approach to market definition
    • dominance issues
  • access to technology markets
    • exclusivity, tying, essential facilities,
    • patent ambushes
  • pricing abuses

Please save the date for Wednesday 20 October when our competition breakfast briefing will focus on contact with competitors.

Further details and invitations will be sent out nearer the date of each briefing.

We look forward to meeting you for a lively debate on "Competition issues in technology and communications" on Wednesday 15 September.
