ARCHBISHOP TUTU DELIVERS INSPIRING COMMENTARY ON MORAL CHALLENGES OF UNITED NATIONS MILLENIUM DEVELOPMENT GOALS

“You have demolished the stereotype of lawyers”

Last night Archbishop Desmond Tutu delivered a lecture entitled "The Millennium Development Goals: A Moral Challenge" to almost 2,000 lawyers in St Paul's Cathedral.

Introduced as a "spiritual icon" and "personal hero" by the Attorney General Baroness Scotland, Archbishop Tutu combined a unique blend of humour and spirituality to deliver a compelling message. He highlighted the grave challenges the world faces from trade barriers to terrorism and civil war to climate change, yet his words were filled with hope and promise.

He concluded that, “just when you're thinking, things are tough, evil seems unstoppable you are exhilarated to discover there is a thing called Advocates for International Development. I want to commend you very very warmly, you are fantastic. You have demolished a stereotype of lawyers. It is fantastic that you are saying, we've got these skills, we've got this experience and we really are committed to wanting to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals."

Chris Marshall, Chairman of A4ID, “We are delighted at the success of the evening. To welcome Archbishop Tutu and listen to him speak, whilst also raising the profile of the work that A4ID does was fantastic. To have lawyers from across the City of London queuing around the block to  attend the lecture was incredible and we hope that as a result more members of the legal community are motivated to seek out their role in the global community.”

A4ID draws together the skills and expertise of the legal profession across the globe to combat poverty and inequality of opportunity in the worlds poorest countries. It provides much-needed legal support and assistance to NGOs, charities, social enterprises and developing country governments.

The event was sponsored by law firm, CMS Cameron McKenna LLP, one of the founding member firms of A4ID. Anthony Fincham, partner and member of the Advisory Council of A4ID comments, “We are thrilled to have played a part in facilitating such a wonderful and informative evening. We are proud to be associated with A4ID. In their relatively short history, they have played a far-reaching role in making pro-bono work available for important projects in the developing world.”
